How to play Ascent
Ascent is a clue-driven word ladder. Solve the trivia clue on each rung to fill in its word, then reorder the rungs so that every step from the start word to the summit changes exactly one letter. The clues get you the words; the ordering is the puzzle.
Rules
- Solve each clue, then reorder the ladder — Tap a rung to type. Use ▲ ▼ or drag to move rungs so every adjacent pair differs by exactly one letter.
- No two-letter jumps between rungs — You cannot park two words next to each other if they differ in more than one position (COLD → WARM is illegal; COLD → CORD is fine).
- Use the fixed start and summit as anchors — The top and bottom words are given. Your job is to fill the climb between them.
- Trivia does not beat the ladder — You cannot keep a clever clue answer that breaks the one-letter step. If two answers fit the clue, the ladder decides.
Tips
- Solve easy clues first — A gimme word anchors the ladder. Neighbors can only be one letter different.
- Pencil the changing letter — If COLD must become CORD or COLT, mark which index is allowed to change before dragging.
- Ends are special — Top and bottom rungs only need one valid neighbor. Use them as parking spots for awkward words.
- Don’t over-fit trivia — The clue is real, but the ladder constraint wins. If two answers fit the clue, the one-letter step decides.
Where it comes from
Lewis Carroll published Doublets in 1879, the original word ladder: change one letter at a time to walk COLD to WARM. Hanging a crossword-style clue on each rung is the modern twist, and it turns a pure spelling exercise into a trivia climb. Ascent keeps both halves.
How it differs from similar puzzles
A classic word ladder gives you only the start and end word and no clues at all. Some ladder games let you rearrange freely at any time; Ascent unlocks sliding once the words are filled, so you solve the clues first and the ordering second.
